joseph-emmerichCreated in 1967, Chillum Youth Project, a 501(c)3 educational charity was founded by Joseph Emmerich to address the needs of young at-risk children of low-income families along the Maryland/District of Colombia border, including Chillum/New Hampshire and Langley Park area. The program is designed to help these kids succeed in school and stay off the streets away from trouble. Based upon the director’s prior experience in law enforcement and education, he realized that many of the troubled youth he encountered could have been saved from the streets and criminal activity if they had received enlightenment and guidance at a young age.

Over the years, we have helped several thousands of young people stay on the right path and encouraged them to remain in school. About 85% of our alumni graduated high school and many have gone on to college and successful careers. For the most part instruction takes place through the use of a mobile classroom bus. Boredom is replaced by experiencing a whole new outside world that helps them develop new ideas and goals for a brighter future.

C.Y.P has received a number of awards over the years, including:

  • Outstanding Youth Employment Program by the U.S. Department of Labor (1979)
  • Linowes Leadership Award (2001)
  • Community Leader of the Year in the Field of Education by the Prince George’s County Educators Association (2010)
